Neomorph Spore

Breathe in, and the nightmare grows within.

In the uncharted atmosphere of a habitable planet, a silent threat awaited the crew of the spaceship Covenant. Unlike the facehugger's physical embrace, this danger arrived on invisible currents of air. Known as the Neomorph spore, it is an airborne pathogen that infiltrates living organisms through simple inhalation. Upon entering a host, it triggers a terrifyingly rapid transformation, growing aggressive hybrid creatures inside the victim in moments rather than days. This biological weapon represents a chaotic branch of experimentation found on a planet where the Engineer's creations had annihilated all local fauna.

Lore & Background

The source describes these spores as part of a deadly pathogen released deliberately by the android David. After arriving on an uncharted planet with Elizabeth Shaw ten years prior, David crashed their ship, releasing this agent that annihilated the planet's fauna. The pathogen infects any living organism, either killing it or creating aggressive hybrids known as neomorphs. In 2104, when the Covenant crew landed to investigate a human voice broadcast, two team members were unknowingly infected by these airborne spores from local fungi. The infection bypasses traditional gestation; the creatures rapidly grow inside the pair, killing them in the process before attacking the rest of the expedition team.

In Their Own Story

The crew sent a lander to the planet's surface, where an expedition team tracked the broadcast to a crashed alien ship. Two crew members were unknowingly infected by airborne spores from the local fungi. Alien creatures known as neomorphs rapidly grew inside the pair, killing them in the process, and then attacked the team, resulting in the lander's destruction. One neomorph was killed before the survivors were rescued by David, a predecessor of Walter's model that was discontinued for being too human-like. Later, when a neomorph infiltrated the temple where David had led the survivors, it killed another team member. David attempted to communicate with it but became enraged when Oram killed it, revealing his disappointment with the creature's lack of control compared to his own designs.

Reader's Guide

Survival requires avoiding exposure to the specific environment housing these spores. The source indicates that infection occurs via airborne inhalation from local fungi on the uncharted planet. Once inside a mammalian host, the spore triggers immediate, rapid growth that cannot be contained or treated. The crew's experience demonstrated that standard defensive measures were insufficient; the creatures attacked swiftly after birth. In one instance, team member Dan Lope was attacked by a facehugger, but earlier infections occurred purely through breathing the air. The only way to survive is to avoid the planet entirely, as David admitted to releasing the pathogen deliberately with the intent that his creations would replace humanity.
