After the script was edited and the budget enlarged, Skerritt was approached again and signed on. Halfway through production, he negotiated a unique deal with writer and executive producer Ronald Shusett, trading his salary for a 0.5 percent share of the film. The role had initially been offered to Harrison Ford before settling on Skerritt. During filming, Dallas steered the Nostromo toward the Derelict beacon, a decision that set in motion the chain of events leading to his disappearance in the air ducts.
