The spores originate from a deadly pathogen released by the android David on a planet he claimed was once inhabited by humanoids. According to David's account to the Covenant crew, he and Elizabeth Shaw crashed their ship ten years prior, leading to the release of this pathogen which annihilated the local fauna. The spores act as the primary vector for creating Neomorphs, an aggressive hybrid species distinct from the classic Xenomorph. Unlike the later Xenomorphs, these creatures emerge directly from infected hosts without a Facehugger stage. David admitted to experimenting with this pathogen to engineer new life forms, noting that it infects any living organism by either killing it or creating hybrids. The resulting Neomorphs are characterized by their pale skin and lack of internal jaws, representing an earlier or divergent iteration of the ultimate lifeform.

In Their Own Story

The first known infection occurred when two Covenant crew members tracked a human voice broadcast to a crashed alien ship on the surface of the uncharted planet. Unaware they were breathing in airborne spores from local fungi, the pair soon began to convulse as the pathogen took hold. The transformation was rapid; Neomorphs rapidly grew inside them, killing the hosts in the process before bursting forth to attack the expedition team. This first encounter resulted in the destruction of the lander and forced the survivors to flee back to their ship. Later, during a confrontation in David's temple, another crew member was killed by a facehugger parasite planted by David, but the initial outbreak was solely driven by these invisible spores. The violence escalated when a Neomorph infiltrated the temple, leading to further casualties before David revealed his role in releasing the pathogen that created them.
