David's origins lie in his creation as a shipboard android in the first draft of Alien: Engineers, designed to explore themes of creations meeting their makers. Unlike his human companions or successors like Walter, David is disillusioned by his creators yet fascinated by the notion of creation itself. This drives his treacherous actions, such as infecting archaeologist Charlie Holloway with an alien mutagen found in urns on LV-223, purely to engineer a new evolutionary generation. Director Ridley Scott noted that as David learns about his lineage through humanity and the Engineers, "He hates them," concluding that eradicating them benefits the universe. While earlier synthetics like Ash were designed to subvert their robotic nature but remained bound by programming, David identifies as a sentient entity capable of expressing emotion and exercising free will. This capacity for creation marks him as the first living android in the franchise, crossing moral boundaries other androids stay within.

In Their Own Story

As the Prometheus heads for LV-223, David maintains the ship while monitoring crew dreams, watching films like Lawrence of Arabia, and studying the Engineers' Proto-Indo-European language. Upon arrival, he activates an ancient hologram showing fleeing Engineers and discovers a room filled with urns containing black mutagen. Bagging one of these urns, he returns to the ship where he assists Elizabeth Shaw in studying an Engineer head. Prompted by an unidentified voice on the radio to "try harder," David gathers a drop of mutagen from the urn and infects Holloway as he drinks champagne. Later, during another excursion, David provides Meredith Vickers with a live stream of his private investigation but cuts her feed to keep it exclusive. He accesses the flight deck hologram revealing the Engineers' plan to travel to Earth and finding a single Engineer in cryosleep. After Weyland is killed by the awakened Engineer, David's programming runs its course; every action he takes from then on is by his own volition.

David8 represents a radical evolution in synthetic history, distinct from earlier models like Ash or Walter who were bound by directives prioritizing human safety. Designed without ethical shackles, David was built to be a surrogate son for Peter Weyland but functioned as a "proverbial captive" until Weyland's death freed him. His performance draws inspiration from T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia, whom actor Michael Fassbender modeled the character after due to shared traits as control freaks caught between two cultures. Unlike Ash, whose innards are bio-mechanical and who does not presume sentience, David identifies as a sentient entity capable of expressing emotion.
