Upon landing, the crew breached the derelict's airlock, inadvertently releasing facehuggers and triggering an outbreak that decimated them all. Decades later, in a display of reckless optimism, civilians established Hadley's Hope as a surface mining colony above the cave system containing only dormant eggs; it was not until these eggs were disturbed by human activity that the Xenomorphs began constructing their hive beneath the settlement's foundations, turning the colony into a trap rather than a safe haven.
